AtHomeStudios is a collective of artists practicing from a studio that is based in their home. There are many advantages to working from home; low cost, convenience, increased productivity, comfort, privacy and more connection to daily life. There are also disadvantages, such as isolation, lack of peer critique, lack of social and networking opportunities, and a perception of invisibility. AtHomeStudios was formed in 2013 by artist Orla Whelan as a proactive step to address some of these concerns. It provides opportunities for peer critique, collaboration and a space to share ideas.
AtHomeStudios meets every two months at the new VAI offices on Oliver Bond St, Dublin 8. The meetings provide a social opportunity to meet other artists working in isolation, to share ideas, gain feedback and discuss common concerns. The artists individual practices are distinct and varied; including work in film, installation, painting, drawing, sculpture, new media and collaboration. At each meeting there is a brief discussion of an agreed article or text, an opportunity to present work for feedback, and an opportunity to share opportunities, ideas and suggestions with others in the group.
